We’re happy to meet on site whenever it suits you — often several times across a project. Ahead of any site work we provide full RAMS, method statements and paperwork, and issue a clear spec of what’s needed from your plumber, electrician and build team to keep the programme moving.

Where a fire engineer needs to get involved
Automist’s tested design parameters cover a room up to around 80m² with a 3.5m ceiling height — within that, most projects go ahead on standard guidance alone. Outside it, a full bespoke fire engineering assessment is the route in, using BS 7974 principles to justify the design. A few other thresholds worth knowing: Approved Document B requires sprinklers or suppression above 11m; BS 8458 covers residential water mist up to 45m, above which the Authority Having Jurisdiction must be consulted on whether an alternative system or extra measures are needed; and in Scotland, every use requires a mandatory site-specific alternative-design submission to the local verifier. None of this replaces your other required fire safety measures — smoke detection, passive fire protection and compartmentation, and smoke ventilation under Approved Document B and BS 9991 still need to be fully complied with regardless. We already work alongside fire engineers who know the system, so where one needs to sign off the specific design, that’s factored into the programme from the start.
Standards & compliance
The old British standard for residential water mist, BS 8458, has been withdrawn — not because anything was found wrong with it, but because the industry is transitioning to the new BS EN 14972-17:2025. Plumis has confirmed BS 8458:2015 remains a valid, recognised basis for system use and specification on new projects as well as existing ones, backed by the British Standards Institution’s own statement that withdrawal doesn’t mean products or certifications built to it can no longer be used or recognised. Automist has also passed the suite of BS EN 14972-17 fire tests, verified by an independent report from Baltic Fire Laboratories (TRBFL2525-1). We can talk you through exactly what that means for your building-control submission.
